Working in Public Libraries

If you are interested in more information about working in Public Libraries or qualifications/course availability please visit: www.alia.org.au.

Work Experience and Industry Placement

Work Experience and Industry Placement spaces are available in both semesters; we may suspend the application process if all places are taken. Please note that branches only take between 1-2 students per term, depending on the size of the branch.
What is Work Experience?

Work Experience is the short-term placement of students with ‘host’ employers, to provide insights into the library as a workplace. Students (typically in Year 9 or 10) are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require extensive training or experience. We accept Work Experience students from secondary schools. Work Experience applications must be made at least four weeks ahead of your planned commencement date.
Please note – some libraries have no remaining availability for 2025.
What is an Industry Placement?

Industry Placements are frequently a required component of tertiary-level information services degrees. We are happy to accommodate students undertaking their mandatory Industry Placement. They are typically 10-day intensive placements designed to provide practical industry experience.

  • Youth organisations undertaking community service certificates, for example Queen’s Guide, Duke of Edinburgh etc. should submit an application for Work Experience.
  • All enquiries about Community Service Placement from the Department of Corrective Services or Specialist Work Company Placements for special needs clients should be directed to:
